In 2006, the City of Charlotte was selected as the site for the NASCAR Hall of Fame and construction is currently underway.  Construction on this facility is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2010.

In 2006, the U.S. National Whitewater Center opened just outside of Charlotte to bring additional recreational opportunities to residents.  The Center offers the facilities and amenities of an outdoor recreational center with a custom-made whitewater river serving as the centerpiece.   The facility will also be used as an official Olympic training center for whitewater slalom racing.
